Making Sweet History

At Sir Walter Candy Co., our story isn’t just about crafting delicious treats; it’s a journey that spans over 25 years, filled with passion, dedication, and a commitment to preserving the art of candy making. Today, we’re excited to share this journey with you through our new “Timeline” section on our website, where you can explore the rich history behind our sweet indulgences.

Over two decades ago, Sir Walter was founded by Alfonso and Alejandra Porras. Their dream began when Alfonso, as a child, received books and recipes from a man named Walter Zittle. Little did he know, those gifts would spark a lifelong passion for the art of candy making. With his wife Alejandra by his side, Alfonso turned his childhood dream into reality.

Their journey took flight in a custom trailer, where they would whip up confections and sell them at local farmers’ markets. It was a humble beginning, but their dedication and love for candy making shone through. As the demand for their sweets grew, so did their ambitions.

Today, we’re proud to operate out of a 36,000 square foot facility, where we continue to keep the tradition of candy making alive. Our mission has always been simple: to spread happiness, one sweet treat at a time, while preserving the artistry and craftsmanship of our trade.

But let’s rewind to where it all began…

In 1971, Alfonso and Alejandra hosted Alfonso’s sister, Rinamai, in New Jersey. It was during this time that Alfonso heard enchanting stories about Walter and his magical candy-making skills. These tales ignited a spark in Alfonso’s young heart, inspiring him to delve deeper into the world of confectionery.

When Walter passed away, Karen Zittle, his widow, recognized Alfonso’s passion for candy making and sent him a few books from Walter’s collection on “The Art of Candy Making.” It was a gesture of trust and encouragement, affirming that the legacy of candy making was safe in Alfonso’s hands.

Moved by Karen’s gesture, Alfonso decided to name his candy company after her late husband, Walter. It was a tribute to the man whose recipes and stories had fueled his love for sweets. Karen’s support didn’t stop there; she even sent him a gold watch as a token of her appreciation.

With the help of their four children, Alfonso and Alejandra embarked on the journey of building their own trailer. This trailer became their mobile kitchen, where they would create fresh, mouthwatering treats right in front of their customers. It took three years of hard work to meet all the health department’s requirements, but when they hit the streets, they brought sweetness wherever they went.

As their popularity soared, Alfonso and Alejandra expanded their horizons. They remodeled a retail space alongside their children, and after years of dedication, they opened their first storefront. It was a dream come true, a place where they could share their passion with the world and continue to develop new recipes and products.

In 2002, Alfonso’s dedication to his craft was recognized when he received an award from the Latino Business Association in Los Angeles, California. The award, “Business Under a Million,” was a testament to his hard work, dedication, and the friendships and partnerships he had built along the way.

As we reflect on our journey, we’re filled with gratitude for all those who have supported us along the way. From the humble beginnings in a trailer to the bustling facility we operate today, our commitment to quality, creativity, and spreading joy remains unwavering.
